Güllük's Famous Legend of Hermias

Güllük's Famous Legend of Hermias Many years ago, happy people lived in Güllük Bay. Everyone here knew each other, shared their sorrows and joys. The children always played together. Hermias was one of these children. He was the most beautiful child of Güllük. He had no one but his mother. His mother protected him from all kinds of evil and fears, and always kept him by her side. One day, Hermias' friends came to their house and said, "Let's go to the sea, Hermias". Hermias asked his mother's permission, but his mother said, "No, honey." Hearing this, the children started to mock him. His mother won't let him go... He can't escape with us... He's a mama's boy… Just like girls…. And they started singing all together; The sea pulls us Us Güllük's children, But what shall we say, The summer sun is above us, it scorches our feet. Aegean pulls us like soil Come on guys let's go to the sea Come on Hermias let's go to the sea! His friends' words made Hermias very angry. His mother, who understood this, said, "My Hermias, come on, go to the sea, but please don't swim too far, you never know what could happen." Hermias happily joined his friends. The salty waters of the Aegean Sea were filled with the sounds of children. The children let themselves go in the cool waters. The wind blew gently. The children swam together. After a while, the shore was rejoiced with the sounds of children again. But Hermias was not among them. The bad news spread quickly. Everyone rushed to the shore saying "The Aegean took Hermias". The most skillful fishermen sailed. Every inch of the bay was searched, but Hermias could not be found. His poor mother denied Hermias' disappearance and began to wait for his return. One day, a fisherman came to the shore in a hurry. He gave the good news, "I saw, I saw, I saw Hermias". To those who said "Then why don't you bring him back?", the fisherman responded, "How can I do it? He was on the back of a dolphin. As I approached, he dived into the sea and swam away." and nobody believed him. "Do dolphins carry people on their back? You must be dreaming!”. But one day, everyone heard that Hermias was back. They ran to the beach. Hermias lay quietly on the sand, with his dolphin friend by his side. They realized that this is the dolphin the fisherman was talking about. An old man said to the people of Güllük: "Think about what you see. That's what friendship is about. The death of Hermias, who had his neck cut off by the fin of his dolphin friend while playing, led this dolphin to death as well. He didn’t abandon his friend under any circumstances. They chose to be together in life and death.” The people of Güllük, who were taken with the situation, carved a Hermias and dolphin statue out of gold. They also made silver coins. They immortalized them. They say the sculpture, which is exhibited in the Selçuk Museum today, is the symbol of this memory. Hermias and the dolphin is a legend of universal friendship. When you visit Güllük, make sure to leave your wishes to the sea and see Hermias!
